Ultraviolet lamps are special devices that create light in the ultraviolet range invisible to humans. They have a different radiation spectrum and are intended primarily for professional (industrial) applications, although there are also domestic options. Under the general name hides a number of different types of light bulbs, each of which has its own pros and cons, its own area of ‚Äč‚Äčapplication and features of use – and we will tell about them.

What does the ultraviolet lamp consist of and how

Ultraviolet sources operate on the principle of a standard fluorescent lamp, where the formation of ultraviolet radiation occurs due to the interaction of electrodes with mercury vapor. The main difference lies in the phosphor and glass. The phosphor is either not applied at all – to release all of the radiation (including dangerous UVC), or one layer is applied, which only passes through part of the spectrum – UVA or UVB. Glass is used quartz or viol, because these types of glass are not filters for UV radiation, and pass it to the maximum extent. In this case, viol glasses have an increased throughput and carefully filter out ozone, preventing it from entering the air. This property of glass was achieved thanks to the manufacturing technology: the composition of the material contains the minimum amount of additives and coloring elements that absorb the UV spectrum. The Right Use

The use of special glass in the process of creating an ultraviolet lamp is a key factor that determines the range of radiation: when the glass components change, its characteristics change, allowing you to create ultraviolet lamps with a wavelength optimal for certain purposes. For example, a disinfection lamp will be as effective as possible if the wavelength in it is 253.7 nm: ultraviolet in this case penetrates the DNA structure of microorganisms, striking them from the inside.        

Technically, the device lamp has 6 main elements that are responsible for the effective operation of the device. Among them:

  1. A tube of special glass that has the ability to transmit ultraviolet light.
  2. Tungsten electrode – it is durable and highly resistant to high temperatures. Depending on the purpose of the bulb, a certain type of tungsten electrodes is selected (their chemical composition, length and design are adjusted).
  3. Pin base of metal or refractory plastic. Located on both sides of the lamp, equipped with a metal rim for a strong connection with the tube.
  4. Molybdenum filaments – are responsible for the current conductivity and the tightness of the flask, since they have a thermal coefficient almost equal to that of glass.
  5. Phosphor layer – is applied on the inside of the bulb and regulates the density of ultraviolet radiation.
  6. Reflex coating – a special compound that can contain certain types of light bulbs (for example, for a tanning bed). It is a reflective layer for ultraviolet concentration: a flask without a reflector is usually transparent, with a reflector – vice versa.

What are UV lamps?

A UV lamp is produced with a different bulb shape – from a compact twisted light bulb to typical fluorescent tubes (so they can look quite different), and classify such devices according to several defining features:

Compact fluorescent

These lamps produce relatively few species, but they are very easy to use.

Linear fluorescent (fluorescent)

This is the main technology in production – there are a huge number of options available in length, power, and spectrum and base. So much so that there are firms that specializes only in linear ultraviolet lamps.

Metal halide

Ultraviolet radiation is often not the main spectrum, but a side spectrum, simply because of the latitude of the spectrum of the glow of the lamp.
